It took an hour, but a patrol officer in a clapped out old marked Ford Crown Vic found the car. It was pulled almost out of sight at a rental cottage. He pulled his gun out and set it in his lap. Then, he called radio control. Radio called Reyes.

Reyes decided not to call in SWAT from the mainland. Two guys, one may have a gun, the other now suspected to be a US Congressman with a broken bone…how dangerous could they be to five detectives with handguns?

“Maria, do you have Nick Wolf’s number?” Reyes asked.

Nick and Lola had gone back to their cottage for lunch. They called Campbell to see whether Lottie had checked in. He was out, but Pamela Swain assured them Lottie had not contacted her boss yet.

Unexpectedly, Nick’s iPhone rang.

“Wolf.”

“Detective Wolf, this is Detective Maria Sosa. Commissioner Reyes wanted me to call you. I got a lead on the congressman and his bodyguard and found they had rented a car. Patrol has located the car at a rental beach cottage. It is technically unrented, so it looks like they have broken in. The bodyguard appeared okay, but they bought medical supplies, so like I said, it is the congressman who is hurt.

“It is a bright blue place. It seems like they may be neighbors of yours a ways down the beach in the opposite direction from town.”

“Yes, Maria. We’ve seen a bright blue cottage about five cottages down from ours. Are you on the way to hit it now? You are? Tell the commissioner we are going to come in from behind in swimwear trying to look like tourists. We will change and are leaving now.”

Lola heard him and put on a bikini and grabbed her coverup in record time. He pulled on trunks but took off his polo shirt to carry it as he thought a tourist might.

They headed down the beach. The blue cottage was perhaps a quarter mile away. There were a few couples and groups of sunbathing women, but no hardbody with an injured congressman in sight yet.

They walked at a comfortable pace for Nick’s antalgic gait limp.

Nick limped but looked more like a beachgoer, albeit a very ripped one. One with a partner and girlfriend who could have won a pole dance contest. Hands down. For sure.

As they approached the blue cottage, they saw the two fugitives come out and head down the beach toward them. They were in tee shirts and shorts. Both had some sort of shoes on.

A younger, fit man helped the older less fit one along. He was made even less fit by a splinted right leg. The splint looked like a battlefield job instead of a medical one.

As they got within thirty feet, a very surprised Nick Wolf raised his hand to them in the universal “stop” gesture.

The younger man, maybe thirty-two or three, pulled a snub-nosed revolver and pointed it at Nick as he steadied the other man with his left side.

For once, Lola Caldwell was shocked at the next thing she heard come out of Nick’s mouth.
